“The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved, for the twenty-third time, on Tuesday October 27, a resolution presented by Cuba calling on the United States to end the blockade it has imposed on the island since 1962.
The UN plenary of 193 member nations supported the proposed resolution entitled ‘The necessity of putting an end to the economic, commercial, financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba’ by a vote of 188 in favour, with two (U.S & Israel) against and three abstentions.
Since 1992, the General Assembly has demanded that the U.S. end its hostile policy toward Cuba which has been implemented by 11 consecutive administrations, and has cost Cuba’s economy an estimated 1.1 trillion dollars. The human suffering caused is incalculable.”
The SDP congratulates all the countries for the continued support towards the ending of the inhumane blockade on Cuba, a vote which continues to expose the contempt that the United States government has towards the U.N and all the countries in the world.
This vote also reiterates the fact the United Nations should be restructured in such a way that its resolutions can be respected by all countries, including the United States. It is a mockery that countries can continue, year in year out, to make resolutions at the UN General Assembly, only for them to be trashed by the United States.
The UN must take the responsibility of promoting world peace and equality of Nations seriously, even if it means interrogating the UN Security Council and other decision making organs, and how to implement the near unanimous decisions made by the UN member countries.
